How to Add Your Favorite Folder or Program to My Computer in Windows 7 and 8

Would you like to have that favorite folder or program that you use all the time listed in Computer along with all your drives so it is really easy to access? Computer is not a regular folder so you can’t just drop a shortcut there the usual way. But there is a quick way to get a shortcut listed in Computer and here’s how.

Windows 7

1. Open the Start search box
2. Enter:  %appdata%
3. The hidden folder “Roaming” will open
4. Navigate to the subfolder MicrosoftWindowsNetwork Shortcuts
5. Place a shortcut there to the desired folder or program

Windows 8

1. Open the Run box with the keyboard shortcut Winkey+R
2. Enter:  %appdata%
3. The hidden folder “Roaming” will open
4. Navigate to the subfolder MicrosoftWindowsNetwork Shortcuts
5. Place a shortcut there to the desired folder or program

That’s it. Open Computer and you will see your shortcut listed as a Network Location.

Kii Keyboard for Android

One of the things that I most enjoy about Android is the fact that the keyboard itself is changeable, and that you could merely install an app that will change everything about the keyboard that you could think of, including such innovations as displaying word predictions and entering text via ‘swiping’ gestures rather than clicking each key individually.

Kii keyboard, which is currently free while in beta, offers both swiping gesture input as well as keyboard predictions. It  addition, it offers multiple language support, multiple skins, long-press shift entry for special or additional characters



There are plenty of good and/or interesting keyboards for Android, so I will cut to the chase and list a few reasons why I like this one (a.k.a. the PROS section).

• Very nice ‘swiping gestures’ input. If you haven’t seen this you must try it. There are other keyboard that offer this that are mostly paid apps (Swype, SlideIT), but the only free option is TouchPal Keyboard, and, at least for the time being Kii Keyboard as well. Note that you have to enable the
• Has a nice ‘feeling’ to it: it feels great from the get go. I know this is subjective, but it’s the whole reason why I am writing it up at all.
• Themes and customizability: many skins to choose from. See screenshot above right.

Cons:

• Adding a custom word to the dictionary seems rather more involved that it should be. They should add a simple ‘add this word’ option right then and there whenever you type in the new word.
• It is frequently difficult to discern some of the special characters that can be invoked via long click. They really should be made more clearly visible.

The verdict: a very nice keyboard, especially if you’re looking for swiping gestures input, which is implemented very nicely.
It does not seem to ‘learn’ and predict your frequently used phrases and words as efficiently as Swiftkey, but it is an excellent keyboard nonetheless that has found a spot as the default keyboard on my Android, at least for now.

Free text editor for Web and Chrome Writebox

Writebox has a minimalist interface and very little else, but thats all by design. Distraction-free writing apps by necessity strip away all manner of excess features to keep you focused on your words rather than how they look on the page, and Writebox delivers on that promise but does add a few essential customizations. 

When you first visit the Writebox site or launch the Chrome app, theres a button at the top to sign in. I thought it would have me create a Writebox account, but, instead, its a Dropbox sign-in that authorizes the two services to connect. Any time you use Writebox, you can just sign in with your Dropbox credentials and not worry about creating another login. Thats simplicity and minimalism at their finest.

In the window is a small top-line menu bar with three buttons on the left—New, Open, and a clock-face icon for "recently opened" items—and three on the right—a trash bin, Account, and Options. Youll also find a Sync button to force your document changes to Dropbox, and an info button with some details about the app.

Other than that, youll see a big, blank screen, where you can type. At the very bottom of the screen are real-time counts for lines, words, and characters, which you can turn off if you like. The customization options are minimal, but some quite necessary, like being able to change the colors of the text and background, increase or decrease the point size and line spacing, and adjust the typeface.

From the Open button in Writebox, you can navigate your entire Dropbox folder structure, but only .txt files will appear, as its the only file type supported by the simple app. My data primarily include Word docs, images (JPGs, mostly), PDFs, and Excel files, and I could see none of them.

While typing in the text editor within the Chrome browser, the menu bar at the top disappeared, creating a wholly distraction-free environment. You can boost the view even more hiding your browsers address bar or otherwise maximizing the window. Mousing back to the top of the page causes the Writebox menu to come back into view.

The app claims that it automatically saves every keystroke as you, but you do have to hit "sync" or the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+s to push changes to Dropbox.

Although the Web and Chrome app are free, iOS users have to pay $1.99 for an installed app on their devices, and an Android app isnt on the menu at all. While some might be peeved to pay for an app thats otherwise free, at least the price is reasonable and in line with other apps of its ilk, such as PlainText iPad app ($1.99 for the ad-free version, 2.5 stars).

As far as distraction-free text editors go, Writebox certainly holds its own, although it would be a much more useful app if it supported the .doc format, as well as more syncing and storage solutions, in addition to Dropbox.

The Voice Student Edition

The following is a guest post by Cristy Vogel (@msfrenchteach).  She is a High School French Teacher in Columbia, SC, 2013-14 SCFLTA President, and #langchat Co-Moderator.  She blogs at theslantedapostrophe.blogspot.com.

This post is not about a special episode of teen singing sensations on The Voice. Hope you’re not disappointed! However, the show did come to mind when thinking about student voice. If you haven’t seen the show, essentially, it’s a contest for aspiring singers who must wow the judges and audience with their vocal abilities. The hope is that the judges will hit the buzzer and declare interest in mentoring the vocalist.  The judges are experienced and very successful celebrities who have industry insights from which the contestants can greatly benefit, in theory.

Much like our students, each contestant hopes to have his or her voice heard in order to learn, grow, and excel.  The classroom may not be a ridiculously loud contest like what we see on The Voice, but it is a place where all learners should have the opportunity to direct their learning. Recent interactions with my own students have inspired me to reflect on voice and its implications in the classroom. In fact, it has only been in the past couple of months that I have really gotten out of my comfort zone and given students the microphone so as to make decisions about their own learning.  It is my pleasure to share with you a few tips that are based on my personal experience. 

Get informed.
Giving students a voice is not an exact science, especially since each classroom is unique. There are ways to prepare yourself for such a risk-taking endeavor, so I recommend that educators take some time to engage in discussion with others who have done it before putting learners on the stage. Read a blog on the topic, talk to on-site colleagues who have success with it, ask your PLN for ideas, and maybe engage in a Twitter chat. Then, ask yourself how your students might direct their own learning in your particular environment. You know your students best!  

Tell stories.
Our learners need a little direction when we give them voice. In fact, all of us -- not just the learners in our classroom -- want to know how and why we’re doing what we’re doing. As educators, anecdotal stories can help as they have the potential to capture students’ attention and guide them to make meaningful recommendations. I tell my students that there are non-negotiable tasks that we must do in life, but we can suggest ways to tailor them to our needs.

My first anecdote this year was about the professional development sessions that our school faculty must attend every other Thursday.  I told them that the PD is non-negotiable, but that teachers can make recommendations for future meetings. I explained that I shares my ideas with our administration in hopes that we will get to try something different. Then, I transitioned into an explanation of the non-negotiable part of the project that we are doing with students at other schools.  We discussed some aspects that they could direct before I gave them a feedback form to complete. I found that the responses were more meaningful than they had been when I had made past attempts at seeking feedback, and I believe my anecdote and our discussion impacted the results.

Just as the contestants on The Voice are prepped before hitting the stage for their first performance, our learners also benefit from a little coaching. After all, don’t we want to make that empowering moment on the stage as successful as possible? Students might not have a voice in many of their classes, so make this time count!

Listen carefully and empower your learners. 
Now that your learners have spoken, reflect on what they said. Sometimes you may receive several comments that are not helpful, but concentrate on the serious ones. Stay positive! Even if only one or two students provide you with meaningful feedback, do your best to make their voices heard. Most students are going to use the power of voice at some point, and that might be when they are making individual, rather than collective, decisions. At any rate, announce the changes that you are going to make as a result of student feedback. I recommend that you let them know repeatedly how much you appreciate it.  In my own experience, learners are happy to hear, more than once, that their voice was heard and that it made a difference. 

The fact is, there is more potential for buy-in when the learning is student-directed. Let’s let our learners shine with the mic in hand!

With this app you have no more to alter the /etc/hosts file on the system partition, which was also a problem on some devices (eg Nexus 7) because changes where reverted after reboot.

Technical:

Name resolution request are answered with "No address associated with the hostname". This is even better than a common hosts file with redirects to 127.0.0.1, because no connection attemp follows. For logging of hostnames is no tcpdump needed!

Browser:

If you want to block content of websites, you have to use a browser app which does not tunnels everything through a proxy! This is because the proxy does also the name resolution. Negative examples I found: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Opera Browser does not work.

Im using Dolphin Jetpack, which works fine for me. Some more info in post #47 of the XDA thread.

Users who have replaced their firmware with the CyanogenMod ROM no longer have issues. We have worked around the issues to make it more robust. Force closes should be gone, background service still gets killed every now and then though, but it should start back up cleanly now.

The Best Keynote Ever

I have been extremely blessed to be invited to speak and work with administrators all over the country.  There is nothing more exhilarating than sharing the work of my students and teachers as it has radically changed how I lead.  Especially during keynote presentations, I talk about the need for school leaders to take calculated risks to initiate meaningful change. However, I rarely demonstrate this in action.

Well, that all changed recently at the Leadership 3.0 Conference in Irvine, CA.  As I was going through my slide deck one final time, a crazy thought crept into my head.  As I looked at my slide on how the learner has changed, I felt that someone else could make a stronger point than I.  During this part of my presentation I typically relay stories of how learners are extremely creative with technology outside of school.  They construct their own knowledge, solve problems, and employ critical thinking skills through many of the games they play.  Thus, the perfect person to make my point was my own son, Nicholas. He is currently a second grade student at PS 3 in Staten Island, NY.

I immediately texted my mother-in-law as I knew there was not much time to act.  Nicholas was about to get picked up at the bus stop and I needed to know at that very minute if he would agree to Facetime with hundreds of strangers and answer a few simple questions.  Once I received the go ahead from him, I tested out Facetime using his sister’s iPad mini as his iTouch was not working.  During this test I told him that I was going to ask him a few questions about Minecraft and that it would be a piece of cake.

Now I am never nervous when I speak, but this time I was a wreck.  In my mind Nick’s performance was going to be the highlight of my keynote.  About ten minutes into my presentation it was time to call him.  The first attempt failed and I had to actually call my wife on my cell phone to work out the small issue.  The second attempt worked and I could not be prouder of my son.  He told the audience that his favorite game was Minecraft and went on to explain all of the amazing things he has created on his own.  He spoke about creating his own McDonald’s that serves food, a racetrack for his pigs, new buildings, and a pool with a slide.  

His little words and cheerful demeanor conveyed a powerful message.  Learning should be fun, creative, collaborative, and self-directed.  Creativity is an essential skill that drives learning, especially that of our younger students. Schools must recognize this fact and work with students at all levels to implement outside experiences that authentically engage students in learning and construction of new knowledge.  Everyone in the audience saw firsthand the profound impact games such as Minecraft are having on my sons learning.  Thank you Nicholas Sheninger for being the best keynote speaker ever!

P.S. I plan on videoconferencing my son into future talks as long as his schedule permits it.
